Size & Thickness Guide
Size & Thickness Guide
Paving slab size and thickness is a topic that most people don't think carefully about until they've already ordered — and then discover that the slabs they've chosen are either far heavier than they can manage, don't cover the area they expected, or don't look right in their specific garden. These are avoidable problems. A bit of knowledge about how size and thickness decisions affect practical outcomes, aesthetics, and application suitability makes ordering correctly the first time completely straightforward.
This guide covers everything you need to know.
Why Size Matters More Than Most People Realise
The size of a paving slab affects three things that may not be immediately obvious:
Visual scale and proportionality: A large patio tiled with small slabs looks like a bathroom floor. A small patio tiled with oversized slabs looks like it's straining under the material. The proportion between slab size and patio area has a significant effect on the finished visual result, and getting it wrong produces something that looks slightly "off" even when the quality of the materials and installation are both high.
Joint density: Every slab has perimeter joints. More, smaller slabs mean more joints across the same surface area. More joints mean more visual lines across the floor, more jointing compound to apply, and more potential points for weed or water ingress over time. Less, larger slabs — the current preferred approach in most contemporary designs — create a cleaner, more open visual surface.
Handling and installation difficulty: The larger the slab, the heavier it is and the more difficult it is for one person to position accurately. 600 x 600mm slabs in natural stone at 20mm thickness weigh around 18–20kg — manageable for most people. 900 x 600mm slabs at the same thickness weigh 27–32kg — requiring two people or careful technique with a slab lifter. 1200 x 600mm slabs can reach 40–50kg — effectively a two-person lift or mechanical assistance.
The Main Size Options and What They're Right For
600 x 600mm (Square Format)
The traditional standard UK paving format. Proportionally balanced, manageable to handle alone for most adults, and creating a classic square grid pattern when laid in a standard bond.
Best for: Traditional property styles, smaller gardens under 15m², paths and side passages, situations where one person is DIY-laying without assistance.
Aesthetic note: The square format has become slightly dated-feeling for contemporary installations — the clean rectangular 900 x 600mm format is now the dominant preference in garden design. However, in the right context — a traditional or period property, a cottage garden — the square format is absolutely appropriate and can look excellent.
Avoid for: Large open patios on modern properties where the large number of joints will look busy and create a dated appearance.
900 x 600mm (Rectangular Format)
The 900 x 600mm slab has become the dominant format in UK domestic paving over the last decade, and for good reason. The 3:2 ratio rectangle is architecturally proportioned, creates directional interest when laid in a running bond pattern, generates fewer joint lines per square metre than smaller formats, and produces a sophisticated contemporary result across a wide range of materials and styles.
Best for: Most domestic garden patios on both traditional and modern properties. Spaces from approximately 12m² upward where the format has room to breathe. Our Manchester Midnight Porcelain in 900 x 600mm and Kandla Grey Indian Sandstone in this format are among our bestselling products precisely because the format works so universally.
Practical note: Requires two people to handle comfortably, particularly for natural stone. Allow time for this in your planning if solo DIY-ing — it's possible with a slab lifter but less comfortable than a two-person approach.
1200 x 600mm (Large Format)
A dramatic, statement format that produces a very open, minimal surface with very few visible joints. Works exceptionally well in large outdoor spaces where the scale of the slab is in proportion with the overall area.
Best for: Large patios over 40m², commercial applications, gardens where a particularly premium, architectural statement is the aim.
Installation note: Large format slabs require very flat, consistent bedding and very experienced installation technique. Any slight variation in the bedding shows across the longer span of the slab. This format is best laid by an experienced professional, and is not recommended as a first-time DIY project.
Mixed Size Packs (Modular or Random Layouts)
Some products — particularly in the Indian sandstone range — are sold as mixed size packs containing multiple slab sizes designed to be laid in a random or modular pattern. These create a more organic, less geometric appearance that works particularly well with natural stone where the natural variation of the material is the whole point.
Best for: Naturalistic garden designs, cottage-style gardens, designs where a structured grid pattern would feel too formal.
Installation note: Mixed-size layouts require more planning — you need to follow the pattern repeat carefully to ensure the random appearance stays genuinely random-looking rather than obviously repeating. Some mixed size ranges come with laying guides.
Thickness Guide: This Part Is Not Optional
Slab thickness determines structural capacity. It is not a stylistic decision. Using the wrong thickness for your application can result in cracked slabs that cost significant money to replace.
20mm Thickness: Pedestrian Applications Only
This is the standard thickness for garden patios, terraces, paths, steps, and any surface where the load will be pedestrian only — people walking, garden furniture, small garden equipment. No vehicles.
20mm is the correct specification for:
- Garden patios and terraces
- Garden paths
- Seating areas
- Steps (treads)
- Entrance porches (pedestrian use)
30mm Thickness: Light-Duty Transition Areas
Some suppliers offer 30mm as an intermediate specification for areas with occasional very light vehicle crossings — a path that an electric garden mower might occasionally traverse, for example. For most domestic applications, the choice is binary: 20mm for pedestrian, 40mm+ for vehicles.
40mm Thickness: Vehicle Applications
Any surface where a car, van, or other significant vehicle will drive or park requires 40mm minimum thickness. A standard passenger car weighs 1,200–2,000kg. This load, concentrated over the four small contact patches of car tyres, creates enormous local stresses in the paving surface. 20mm slabs in this application will crack — not if, when.
40mm is the correct specification for:
- Driveways
- Parking areas
- Hardstandings where vehicles park or manoeuvre
The most important rule: If you're in doubt about whether vehicles will ever use a specific area, specify 40mm. The incremental cost of additional thickness is small. The cost of cracked slabs and relaying is very large.
Ordering the Right Quantities
Our size and thickness guide page includes a detailed calculator for working out quantities from your measured area. The key principle: always add 10% to your calculated area to account for cuts and breakage, and for natural stone, verify that your batch order will provide consistent calibration across the full delivery.
