900x600 Slabs vs Patio Packs: Which Should You Choose?

Two of the most popular ways to buy paving slabs for UK gardens are 900x600 slabs (a single, larger format) and patio packs (mixed-size formats in a pre-calculated bundle). Both have genuine advantages, and the right choice depends on your garden size, layout, and the look you're going for.

What Are 900x600 Paving Slabs?

900x600mm (90cm x 60cm) is one of the most popular individual slab formats in the UK — large enough to cover good areas quickly, and proportioned to work well in contemporary garden designs. They're available in sandstone, porcelain, and other materials, and they create a clean, regular, grid-pattern look.

What Are Patio Packs?

Patio packs contain a mix of two, three, or four different slab sizes designed to be laid in a specific pattern (often called a "random" or "multi-size" layout). For example, a typical Indian sandstone patio pack might contain a mix of 600x600mm, 600x300mm, 450x450mm, and 300x300mm slabs, all calibrated to be laid together in a repeating random pattern.

Patio packs are designed so that the mix of sizes covers a specific area — typically 15m², 20m², or similar — with minimal waste.

Coverage and Waste

For a regular, rectangular patio: 900x600 wins. The uniform size makes it easy to calculate coverage, and cuts are predictable — typically just at the edges.

For an irregular patio with multiple angles, steps, or features: patio packs can be more economical. The mixed sizes give more flexibility for fitting around obstacles, and the smaller units in the pack can fill awkward spaces with less waste.

For either option, always add 10% to your measured area for wastage and breakages.

Aesthetics

900x600 slabs create a modern, contemporary look — regular, ordered, and clean. This suits modern gardens, minimalist schemes, and properties with angular, contemporary architecture.

Patio packs in a random multi-size layout give a more traditional, informal appearance that suits cottage gardens, period properties, and any scheme where an aged, organic look is wanted. Our Indian sandstone patio pack options are particularly popular for this reason.

Installation Speed and Complexity

900x600 slabs are faster to lay. One large slab covers 0.54m² and requires one bedding and levelling operation. The uniform size also makes it easier to maintain consistent joint widths.

Patio packs take longer. Multiple slab sizes need to be sorted, and laying a random multi-size pattern requires more planning to ensure the pattern looks natural and consistent, without two of the same size ending up adjacent.

If you're a confident DIYer, either is manageable — but for a first paving project, the simplicity of a single format like 900x600 is easier to work with.

Cost Comparison

For equivalent materials, patio packs and 900x600 slabs are often similarly priced per m² — but check total project costs carefully:

  • Patio packs: price typically includes the mix; check what's included in the m² quote
  • 900x600 slabs: straightforward per-m² pricing; easier to calculate total cost

Both options benefit from bulk ordering. For larger patios (over 20m²), always ask for a volume price.
